How does an ultrasound examination work?

The patient makes him/herself comfortable on the examination table in a slightly darkened room, usually on the back; now and then a special position or a brief holding of the breath will be necessary.  For the examination of certain stomach organs (gall bladder, pancreas, etc.), the patient should arrive on an empty stomach, i.e. having abstained from food and drink (especially mineral water) for 8 hours prior to the examination.
A gel will be applied to the skin at the beginning, and the boom head will be positioned above the organs to be examined.
