All men over 45 years of age should undergo an annual prostate screening.
At first a tactile examination is recommended, as well as the determination of the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) value.  In many cases these tests are not sufficient; a Prostate MRI provides greater accuracy.
In particular a Prostate MRI is advisable for patients:

• with high PSA readings (over 4.0 ng/ml) or increasing PSA readings or unclear tactile
   results
• for exact planning of tissue sample (biopsy)
• where a tumour is suspected and a biopsy showed no tumour
• where prostate carcinoma is confirmed, for determination of the exact extent of the
   tumour
• who seek maximum certainty from screening
• to monitor therapeutic progress

The combination of several measurements can increase diagnostic accuracy by over 90%.
Besides precise data on localization, size and expansion of tumours, it provides the grading (tumour stage) in terms of low, middle and high Gleason scores.
Biopsies can also be done in more targeted and deeper areas.
With lower gradings and observed behaviour, the testing process is reliable.
Diffusion measurement of the entire pelvis highlights all lymph nodes, so that these can be either observed during the treatment or be surgically removed, or be radiated.

The x-ray assistant positions the patient comfortably on the examination table, situating the area to be examined in a coil, which serves as a transmitter and receiver of radio waves.  
Since the imaging sequences create considerable noise, the patient is fitted with a headset immediately before the start of the examination.  An emergency ball is placed in the patient's hand, with which he or she can stop the examination instantly in case of an emergency.  The patient and the x-ray technician can communicate by intercom at any time and the examination team always has full view of the patient.

The examination takes about 40 minutes.

No specific preparation is necessary.

Before the examination you should drink as little as possible and avoid coffee, tea and nicotine.

At least 6 weeks should elapse between prostate biopsies.
