Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Scope of Examination

MRI of Joints
MRI of the Scull
MRI of the Blood Vessels
MRI of the Heart
Full-body MRI
MRI of the Breast- Stomach and Pelvis
MRI of the Bowels

Further information on MRI and preparation for the examination can be found here.

MRI of Joints

Even the smallest injury and tear of tendons, ligaments, meniscus (cartilage), cartilage of the joints and mussels can be identified with the help of the images.  Also changes in bones can be easily recognized.  Osteoporosis cannot be determined through MRI.
MRI is particularly suited to examination of the spine, e.g. changes of the discs can be shown with precision.
Knees and shoulders are the joints most often examined but elbows, hips, finger- and foot-joints also show up very well.
The examination can also help in the diagnosis of inflammations and tumours.

MRI of the Scull

MRI of the scull is the most exacting examination tool in the clarification of headaches, dizzy spells, inflammations, strokes, brain tumours, suspected metastasis, brain nerve and chronic diseases of the nervous system and of the pituitary gland.

MRI of the Blood Vessels (Angiography, MRA)

In principle nearly all vessel areas of the body can be examined very well and without risk.  The most frequent questions refer to the clarification of circulatory problems and vasodilation.  For instance, one of the treatable causes of high blood pressure can be the narrowing of kidney vessels, which is recognized by an MRA.

MRI of the Heart (Cardio-MRI)

MRI is able to show the structure of the heart and the large blood vessels, as well as the function of the heart valve.  The size of the ventricle can be defined, the function of the moving heart be assessed, the circulation of the cardiac mussels established and eventually produce images of the extent of damage to the cardiac mussels after a heart attack.  Also congenital malformations of the heart can be shown with this examination.  Cardiac mussel inflammations, as well as heart tumours can be clarified.

Full-body MRI

The newest technology enables the examination of the entire body in a single process, within a reasonable timeframe.
This is especially motivated within the framework of a screening.  This examination is also a very good idea in the search of metastases in tumour sufferers.

MRI of the Breast- Stomach and Pelvis (thorax, abdomen, liver, kidney)

MRI is suitable for the presentation of the pancreas, the liver, the gall bladder- and pancreatic passages, the spleen, the kidney, the adrenal glands, the stomach artery and the bowels, as well as the organs of the chest area.  Also the pelvic organs, e.g. the uterus and the prostate can be exactly presented.
MRI can also be used for precise clarification of tumours.

MRI of the Bowels (virtual colonoscopy, MRI of small intestine)

With magnetic resonance imaging the small intestine and the colon can be clarified.

A virtual colonoscopy is a good idea:

  • when cancer of the colon has occurred in a family member.
  • when a polyp is already identified.
  • when blood appears in the stool.
  • when an inexplicable weight loss or loss of appetite has occurred.
  • in general for men and women over 45 years of age.

An MRI of the small intestine is motivated in the clarification of inflammatory diseases and to exclude changes in tumours.
