Multislice Computer Tomography

What are the advantages compared to the risks?

CT of the Skull
CT of the Chest Area (Thorax)
CT of the Stomach Area (Abdomen) and Pelvis
CT of Blood Vessels (Angiogram, CTA)

CT of the Skull

Advantages: It is the only method which enables  detailed images of bones, soft tissue and blood vessels.
CT-scans of the skull are preferred to clarify suspicion of a new hemmorhage, as well as all questions concerning visible bone structures and calcifications.
The examinations can be done in an extremely short timeframe. Patients on whom no MRI can be performed (due to claustrophobia or pacemaker) can undergo a computer tomography without a problem.

Risks: During each CT scan the patient is subjected to radiation.  State-of-the-art technology keeps these to a minimum.  Nevertheless, the radiologist always considers alternative, radiation-free methods.
In very rare cases, the contrasting agent brings about an allergic reaction.
We are of course trained and equipped to deal with such emergencies.  The radiologist will avoid contrasting agent if you have had an allergic reaction to it in the past.
A pregnancy is considered a contra-indication for the CT scan.

CT of the Chest Area (Thorax)

Advantages: It is the only method to produce detailed images of bones, soft tissue and blood vessels.
CT scans of the chest area are preferred to clarify most illnesses in the breast area. The scans can be done in an extremely short time. Patients on whom no MRI can be performed (due to claustrophobia or pacemaker) can undergo computer tomography without a problem.

Risks: During each CT scan the patient is exposed to radiation.  Our state-of-the-art technology keeps this to a minimum.  Nevertheless, the radiologist always considers alternative, radiation-free methods.
Allergic reaction to contrasting agent, when used, is very rare.  We are of course trained and equipped to deal with such emergencies.  If you have had an allergic reaction to contrasting agent in the past, the radiologist will not administer it.

CT of the Stomach Area (Abdomen) and Pelvis

Advantages: It is the only method to produce detailed images of bones, soft tissue and blood vessels.  CT scans of the stomach area serve to clarify most illnesses in the breast- and pelvic areas. The examinations take very little time. Computer tomography is available for patients for whom MRI is problematic (for example due to claustrophobia, or a pacemaker.

Risks: During each CT scan the patient is exposed to radiation.  Though our state-of-the-art technology keeps this to a minimum,, the radiologist always considers alternative, radiation-free methods.
Allergic reaction to the contrasting agent, when used, is very rare.
We are, of course, trained and equipped to deal with such emergencies.  If you have had an allergic reaction to contrasting agent in the past, the radiologist will not administer it.

CT of Blood Vessels (Angiogram, CTA)

Advantages: CT Angiogram is the best method to show arterial vessels.  In contrast to the catheter angiogram, it is more patient-friendly and less uncomfortable, since the contrasting agent is injected in the arm and not in the groin.  After the scan no restrictions are imposed on daily routines.
Computer tomography is available for patients for whom MRI is problematic (for example due to claustrophobia, or a pacemaker.

Risks: During each CT scan the patient is exposed to radiation.  Our state-of-the-art technology keeps this to a minimum.  Nevertheless, the radiologist always considers alternative, radiation-free methods.
