Who can be affected?

Osteoporosis often occurs in women after menopause and in advanced age. Nearly every third German woman and every fifth man from age 50 and up are affected.

Some risk factors:

• family history
• gender
• early start of the last period
• unbalanced diet, e.g. insufficient calcium intake
• low weight or unwanted loss of weight
• excessive tobacco and alcohol consumption
• prior bone fractures
• lack of exercise
• medication treatment, e.g. with cortisone
• loss of body mass > 4 cm
• great risk of falling
